It also depends on what if any GP's are being pushed to the machine, how big the users profile is (yes I know we are talking simply power up here) but ask any users, and they will tell you that it takes 5-10 minutes to come to their desktop before they can actually open any programs and get to work. Well Yea, you have a 15 gig profile and of course its going to be slower... But alas, looking forward to the technology catching up to the end users desires.

There are 4 replies, with the last one on 02/02/2012 at 11:36:29 AM by Ido
Quote:
Hi Michael,

Thanks you for you’r input. It took us some time but we have solved the problem and can activate machines again. You were right. There is no way around this problem. We had to create more virtual machines and rearm them, in order to get the count up. See Citrix KB : http://support.citrix.com/article/CTX128580 for more information. Just making those machines in order to get the count up is not enough. There should be enough working machines in the network, some of the time (they need to be started once in a while), just to ‘keep the count up’. The ‘Cache’ will be deleted after 180 days (as far as I understood) so if there were machines registered there (which are not active at a time) they will be ‘gone’ and we are down again to a low KMS count. The KMS activation is only good for 180 days. After that, the already activated machines will try renewing. If the count is under 25, they will not be authorised again and will go into a 30 days period before Windows will begin telling the users that it may not be genuine. My advice to people – don’t use KMS service if you don’t have to.

Wherever the trans log backups are being written to, is there enough empty disk for the backup files to be written?

A recent hardware or software change might be the cause to fix the problem:
1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2. Choose your language settings and then click "Next."
3. Click "Repair your Computer."
If you do not have this disk, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.
Status: 0xc000000f

Now, I did a bit more digging and found this Technet Article:

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itproinstall/thread/355e386c-7472-48e2-998e-6ae1d14f7e3f

Basically I followed these steps and it worked OK:

1. copype.cmd x86 c:\winpe_x86

2. copy “c:\program files\windows aik\Tools\x86\imagex.exe” c:\winpe_x86\iso
3. imagex /mountrw c:\winpe_x86\winpe.wim 1 c:\winpe_x86\mount

4. xcopy "c:\program files\windows aik\Tools\x86\Servicing" c:\winpe_x86\iso\Servicing /s

5. copy c:\winpe_x86\winpe.wim c:\winpe_x86\ISO\sources\boot.wim

6. oscdimg -n -bc:\winpe_x86\etfsboot.com c:\winpe_x86\ISO c:\winpe_x86\winpe_x86.iso

Burn the .iso file and reboot the PC (making sure the PC is set to boot from CD-ROM/DVD first). Also, make sure you burn the ISO file correctly!

I then get the Windows PE prompt (at last) [:D]

Edit: I should have stated that I am using Windows 7 Professional and WAIK version 6.1.7600.16385

IMO, any drive can go bad instantly. Backups can be on logical partitions or physical partitions. I'm sure you already know the difference. If not, ask for an explanation between the two.

If I run into a drive where data recovery is needed, I use backtrack Linux to attempt a recovery. There are other distributions that are favored by other users. Either way, a boot CD has to be created & used to boot the machine. Then the original hard drive has to be mounted & read. I use the following commands:
fdisk -l (that's the letter l)That will tell me if the hard drive is seen. If it is, it will probably say /dev/sda1 or something similar.
Then I would run the following commands:
cd /mnt
mkdir ntfs
ln -s /dev/sda1 /mnt/ntfs
cd /mnt/ntfs
ls -asl |more

You should see the missing files. If you do there are ways to copy them across the network, once you connect the NIC
That would be:
dhclient eth0

When a meeting request is sent using the calendar, is there a way to have the status of the request updated when the request is opened and viewed instead of having to rely upon waiting for the user(s) to accept or decline the meeting request? We seem to have several individuals who will claim they never receive meeting requests or simply choose to not respond and that has a tendency to screw up work scheduling and places more burden on me to search out for potential problems with the current method of using outlook with code two public folders (we currently do not have exchange and I'm evaluating a lab installation). This functionality, if possible will need to be used when receiving these requests either via the internal LAN or mobile phones (android).

You can read about the usage and the parameters in the documentation: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124519.aspx (simply Google the cmdlet, then click the first hit)

Notice that the required parameters are on top of the list, followed by the optional parameters. According this table we need the Name and ExternalEmailAddress parameter to make it work. The minimal usage is like this:

New-MailContact -Name "Jetze Mellema" -ExternalEmailAddress stoppen@hotmail.com
Agree? Now the csv-file magic, this is really interesting and not so complicated as it may seem at first.

The Import-csv cmdlet reads an csv-file en outputs the contents, which we can use as input for the next command. Lets create a csv-file with only this content:

FullName,Mail
Jetze Mellema, stoppen@hotmail.com
John Smith, mail@something.com

Save the file as test.csv. Now give the command 'import-csv test.csv', the output will be like:

FullName Mail
-------- ----

Jetze Mellema stoppen@hotmail.com
John Smith mail@something.com

As with all cmdlets you can pipe this output to other cmdlets as ft and fl. Notice that import-csv interprets the header of the file as the column names, we will use this names now to use the output as input for New-MailContact.

Import-csv test.csv | foreach { <insert our stuff here> }

Between the brackets we can write our cmdlet which will be run for every line in the csv-file. For example:

Import-csv test.csv | foreach { New-MailContact -Name $_.FullName -ExternalEmailAddress $_.Mail }

Notice we use $_ to refer to the data coming from the stream and then a dot and the name of the 'column'. I'm sure that other members on the forum can explain this in better terminology but this is all I have for you. [:)]

Did it help?

But there are some add-ons you can buy to really make it powerful. There are several control panel add-ins that let you bulk modify permissions on Google Docs, move ownership, bulk set permissions, etc. One that comes to mind is Promevo gPanel, it has some really great stuff if you find that the built-in admin tools are lacking.

I recommend not jumping to quickly into an add-in though. This way you can see what specific challenges you face and buy accordingly since each environment has it's own requirements. It's also always good to learn the platform before making additions to it.

You can also get gPanel for free if you use them as your re-seller.

"Perceptive Powers" is a phrase used to describe a thinking persons ability to assess a decision and come to a conclusion that may not be easily manifest.

True I have a phone , but I don't have an iPhone. I have taken a good bit of teasing for not getting an Apple product.

But a recent article told me I made a good decision not going with that phone.

http://business.newsvine.com/_news/2012/01/22/10211052-why-apple-says-it-cant-build-an-iphone-in-the-us#comments

It seems that the company can brag about their offshore faciilties that can pull thousands of workers out of the company dorms, be fed a cup of tea and an biscut and be put on a 12 hour shift to fast pace the new iPhone out the door.

Not sure how many of you have read the history of the industrial revolution but this is very much akin to abuses of the past.

Now if people are willing to do this for their own business I applaud the dedication, but if compelled to keep their gig just to keep their place in the "DORM" (Talk about doublespeak), then it is another matter. It's very true that most of our electronics come from off shore, but when I percieve that a product is being marketed at a consumer base that reacts rather than acts on the products offered something goes off in that "Secret Person of the heart".

That voice says, just what is going on here.

Who knows, I may yet get an iPhone. Or perhaps something else. I'm not crazy about what I have seen so far from the new Windows Phone offerings.

But I've not persued it.

Yet in view of this article my perceptive powers are telling me that I'm kinda glad I don't have one.

This way I'm out of the "iPhone collective". Collectivism is just not my thing.

I wonder what kind of tea that was?
[;)]

There are 4 replies, with the last one on 01/21/2012 at 07:57:10 AM by joe_elway
Quote:
Some of the best guidance on this from MSFT is -implied- in the virtualisation recommendation for Forefront TMG. You absolutely can use a combination of VLAN ID (tag) and firewall rules to run many different firewalled VMs on a single host and even on a single NIC. Should you?

The Hyper-V virtual network is secure. You cannot hop VLANs on it. However, if you introduce NIC teaming from a 3rd party then the guidance can change. You MUST read the NIC teaming documentation that is relevant to the version of NIC teaming that you install. BTW, always install the latest one you can find when deploying the host, and then test the crap out of it. I'm looking forward to Win 8 native NIC teaming.

Here's my recommendation for host NICs:

1 NIC: parent
1 (or more) NIC: Internal VMs
1 (or more) NIC: External VMs

Pysical isolation of external facing networks protects internal facing from external influences, e.g. DDOS. DDOS happens more often than you would think, and it happens to the SMEs too because they are less capable of defending themselves from blackmail attacks. Being in some hosting data center is no protection either ... they usually charge a fortune for "protection" against DDOS cos the devices are expensive.

Ideal world, you'll have seperate hosts in the DMZ, but not everyone has the scale to justify that.

There are 14 replies, with the last one on 01/17/2012 at 8:58:42 PM by anthony
Quote:
I have a HTC EVO (Sprint) and I was seeing issues with my calendar only doing a one-way sync with Exchange 2010. As a matter of fact, none of the 5 Android devices that our users have would sync the calendar. Changes from Outlook/Exchange were pushed, but nothing that happened on the phone would get back to Outlook. If you changed an appointment time in Outlook, it would leave the old one, then add a new one with the new time.

I ended up doing a few different things to fix it from things I read on different forums.

1. Delete the sync partnership from the phone.

2. Clear the cache of the calendar app.

3. In Outlook, while in Calendar view, show ALL appointments in "list" view. Do a Ctrl "A" and select all the appointments. Right-click and put a category on ALL of them (anything it does not matter). Let it finish. Then Right-click again, and REMOVE the category. Supposedly, this does some sort of "refresh" on the calendar data from the server, and makes it all sync up again with the server. (god only knows, but it works)

4. Remove the battery from your phone, and re-insert it.

5. Power it on, and re-create the ActiveSync partnership.

After doing all that, my calendar started working again both ways. Apparently, it's bad on the built in Android app to accept appointment requests from the phone. One user I read narrowed it down to accepting an appointment, is what caused the calendar sync to stop.

Strange, but I would still not use an iPhone.

VM administrators really need to be aware of where their VMs are running at any time so we can make decisions to make sure workloads are able to continue running.

However, I still recommend running all your VMs on the SAN with the proviso that you make sure you have more than one array and that your important VMs (AD/DNS/DHCP etc.) are strategically placed on different arrays (i.e. don't have all DCs on the same shelf or same LUN or even same array and so on). Plan for an entire shelf of drives to go dark. Cluster your array controllers and never have just one path to any LUN. Use SAN based replication to other arrays including off site. Invest in storage virtualization which abstracts the underlying SAN hardware so that you have the most options and flexibility to add, move or change the underlying SAN architecture. It's the best of both worlds.

Those are some of the best practices for running VMs on the SAN.

I will say that with any company I've done work with with, I've never seen a "single SAN" or even a single array. The arrays always come with multiple controllers and switches and for high tier workloads, the arrays are mirrored to a whole other set of arrays and controllers, sometimes at a completely different site. In a properly configured and designed production SAN, it simply would not be possible for the _entire_ SAN (from the host's perspective) to go down-without it being a major site outage, in which case you have bigger issues than just your VMs going down or becoming isolated. In that case, that's where your SAN based replication or mirror to a secondary site will come into play, including your vSphere stretch cluster and HA.

If you can't have this level of redundancy in your SAN or you have only one array, then it is better to keep some parts of an application either physical or on a local disk of a host, like a DC or DNS server.

Its almost as if there is a seperate settings profile (for want of a better word) for the X and Y locations of these that if changed on the built in screen the external screen wont pick this up and also the other way around.

If the shortcuts are renamed and then moved this is picked up but if just moved it isn't.

I've been trying a load of differnt things to get this so the icons remain in the same locations (allowing for a difference in resolution of course) but am not having any luck.

There are 3rd party tools that can remember certain layouts but if I can avaoid using 3rd party fixes then that would be the best route.

Has anyone experianced this and managed to get around it so no matter what display you are using the icons remain in roughly the same location?

Any advise will be greatfully received.

Many thanks.

How many days should it take if we start from scratch as opposed to doing the migration?

Thanks!

Tom

If there are 10 people there, and working OK, whats the driver to migrate?
What does your own company have? Do you want to integrate?

I'd have a good read of this first
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=14570
I don't mean to sound silly, but set aside time to read it, read it twice once standalone and take notes, second time looking at the SBS 2K3 box and take notes, what is and isn't normal.

Download and install this and look at the outputs, and get stuff fixed.
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=15261

Then if you have the extra kit ( you should you mentioned you had bought a new server) virtualise the old SBS box and do a test migration. That will be the best time calculator you can have.

Remember, this is a DC, Exchange, file share, sharepoint,DNS, DHCP, print server and so much more, so getting the migration done in a few days successfully is quite an achievement. (Exchange 2003 to 2010 migrations can take a few days all by themselves!)

It has been mentioned already by myself and others, but Jeff Middletons Swing Migration, is the best way I've ever used to migrate SBS and others.
http://www.sbsmigration.com/pages/13/
Thats the price page, best money I've spent a few times and no, I have no association to the site or the business.

Wes's migration was an odd one, so do not allow that to colour your judgement on the migration process.

Choose what you have got less of.
To connect to a Windows server over RDP or ICA you need a TS CAL (Windows NT4 WTS - 2003) or RDS CAL (2008), again either per user or per device. The only exception here is connecting to a Server 2000 TS from a Windows 2000 professional client.

Basically, if you have more users than devices (shift workers) you choose device CALs. If you have more devices than users (users have multiple devices each) you choose user CALs. That's it, as far as Windows is concerned.

Do be aware that software installed on your TS/RDS can have other licensing requirements. MS Office, for instance, is only licensed per device. So, if you have 30 users on your TS but each one of them has a PC at the office, a laptop, a PC at home and an iPad, you might end up needing 120 licenses. It's not that simple so you'd probably get away with only 90 licenses, but still.
