Looking for any thoughts on hosting email internally vs hosting mailboxes via ISP or outsourced provider. Have need to provide email services for approx 25 users in a small government agency office. Outside of obvious advantages of both options, has anyone done cost analysis for similar scenario or have any feedback at what user count it may make sense to bring in house.
For 25 uers, I would recommend an ISP or a hosting provider. One with a good infastructure and redundant hardware.
If you brought it in-house, you would need the hardware, software, network admin, a reliable and quick Internet connection, plus you would need to worry about security. Too expensive for 25 users in my opinion.
I have a server at home and I host my own web and mail. It depends if you should do that. Like lagwagon says, you need reliable servers and bandwidth for that, plus the time to administer the server and the rest. I chose to host my own web & email because I like it; but that might not be your case. To me is a hobby. Check out godaddy.com and look at their email packages. Not at bad price at all should you decide to go that route.
